From Awareness to Action: The Journey of “Roots to Routes”

Youth unemployment continues to remain one of the major socio-economic challenges in Sri Lanka. While many young individuals possess academic qualifications and skills, a lack of career awareness, financial literacy, and exposure to sustainable income opportunities often prevents them from reaching their full potential. Recognizing this growing issue, the Rotaract Club of the University of Kelaniya launched Roots to Routes under the Rota Tomorrow 6.0 competition, aiming to guide youth toward informed career pathways and economic independence.

The project unfolded through three carefully designed phases, each addressing a different challenge faced by today’s youth.

The first phase, Infrastructure & Foundation, focused on improving career awareness among youth. A digital flyer series was launched covering topics such as unemployment, financial literacy, investment awareness, skills development, and self-employment. In addition, a department-wise video series was conducted in collaboration with several departments of the University of Kelaniya. These videos provided students with practical exposure to career opportunities, industry trends, and migration-related pathways connected to their degree programs.

However, career awareness alone is not enough in a rapidly changing economy. Financial literacy has become equally essential. Recognizing this need, the second phase of Roots to Routes focused on strengthening financial confidence among youth.

The second phase centered on Financial Literacy & Investment Awareness. Conducted in collaboration with the National Youth Services Council, Maharagama, and supported by Wealthy Minds Academy as the official knowledge partner, the workshop introduced participants to stock market investing, risk awareness, financial planning, and responsible money management. The session focused on simplifying financial concepts and encouraging young people to make informed financial decisions for their future.

The final phase focused on Rural Self-Employment Development in Radawadunna, Weweldeniya. After conducting field research and engaging with the local community, the project identified the need for support in marketing and business visibility among cane product producers. To address this, an interactive workshop on e-marketing and business development was conducted, while a dedicated website was introduced to help promote their products to a wider audience.

Roots to Routes became a platform that empowered individuals to move from uncertainty to opportunity. By connecting education, financial awareness, and entrepreneurship, the initiative successfully created sustainable pathways for youth to build confident and independent futures.
