The Beginning of a Colorful Journey
The spirit of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year came alive in grand fashion as the Club Service Avenue of the Rotaract Club of the University of Kelaniya proudly presented Rota Wasantha Udanaya ‘26, a celebration filled with tradition, excitement, and fellowship. Bringing together students, cultural elements, and vibrant festivities, the event became one of the most memorable highlights of the RI year 2025–26.
The journey of Rota Wasantha Udanaya ‘26 began months before the festival day, with the appointment of the Organizing Committee and the commencement of weekly OC meetings from early February. The first meeting, held on 2nd February 2026, marked the beginning of an exciting chapter as committee members gathered with a shared vision of creating a festival that would celebrate culture while strengthening bonds within the university community.
Laying the Foundation
As preparations progressed, the Cyber Ground of the University of Kelaniya was selected as the official venue for the celebration. The spacious outdoor setting perfectly complemented the festive atmosphere of the the Avurudu season, creating the ideal backdrop for a colorful day filled with traditional games, music, laughter, and unforgettable memories.
Behind the scenes, the organizing team worked tirelessly to ensure every aspect of the event was executed successfully. From fundraising and sponsorship coordination to budgeting and logistical planning, every detail was carefully managed with dedication and teamwork. Several valuable partnerships further elevated the event, with sponsorships and gift vouchers being provided by Advanced Barcode Technologies (Pvt) Ltd, Shutter House (Pvt) Ltd, Lucky Super Food City, Seedevi Motors, Naturals, Caravan Fresh, and Auto Miraj. Their generous support played a significant role in enhancing the quality and scale of the festival.
Introducing New Traditions
This year’s edition of Rota Wasantha Udanaya introduced several innovative elements that added a fresh identity to the celebration. For the first time in the history of the event, an official anthem was launched, giving the festival its own musical signature and creating a stronger emotional connection with participants.
Modern media production techniques, including drone videography and immersive 360-degree camera coverage, also added a new level of professionalism and creativity to the event documentation. In addition, dedicated social media platforms established exclusively for the project helped expand the digital reach of the festival and increased engagement among students and supporters.
The Spotlight Event – Avurudu Kumara and Kumariya
One of the most anticipated highlights of the festival was the Avurudu Kumara and Kumariya pageant, which brought elegance, excitement, and glamour to the celebration. Participants underwent a special workshop conducted under the guidance of Ms. Janoo Gunathilake and Mr. Deshan Ranasinghe, helping them prepare confidently for the competition.
A professional photoshoot further enhanced the visual identity of the pageant, while the presence of esteemed judges Mr. Sachin Liyanage, Mr. Ishara Madhushan, and Ms. Nethmi Roshel added prestige and recognition to the competition.
A Day Filled with Festive Spirit
Finally, the much-awaited day arrived as Rota Wasantha Udanaya ‘26 unfolded at the Cyber Ground with color, energy, and festive spirit. The celebration commenced with a graceful traditional opening by popular actress Ms. Yohani Hansika, warmly welcoming participants into an atmosphere filled with joy and excitement.
Throughout the day, the grounds were filled with laughter and cheerful competition as participants enthusiastically engaged in traditional Avurudu games such as Kotta Pora and Kana Mutti Bidima. The festival beautifully revived the essence of Sri Lankan New Year traditions while creating opportunities for students to connect, celebrate, and enjoy moments of togetherness.
The Avurudu Kumara and Kumariya pageant undoubtedly became one of the biggest attractions of the day, drawing the attention and admiration of the crowd. Combined with lively entertainment, cultural performances, and vibrant decorations, the entire event successfully blended tradition with modern creativity, making the celebration both meaningful and unforgettable.
