Santa’s Elves

A mere mentioning of the word ‘Christmas’ alone does not fail to create a magical vibe of a colourful and vibrant atmosphere. Reds and greens blended along with the Christmas tree, mistletoes, poinsettias, tinsels, and of course Christmas wreaths are essential decorations that will spice up the jubilant ambience of the most awaited season of the year.

In a period of time when celebrations are limited to one’s own household, the little holiday gatherings for festive decorations are undeniably missed more than ever. Identifying this lacuna, the avenue of Club Service of the Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya, along with the Interact Club of Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala launched the project ‘Santa’s Elves’, a handcraft competition to unleash the crafter within the participants.

The registrations were opened from 12th of December 2020 to get registered for the competition through a google form. Since the competition was opened to everyone, much enthusiastic participation could be witnessed. Submissions were opened form 17th of December 2020. The participants were instructed to submit a photo of the craft initially, and then a video of creating the handcraft limiting the duration to less than 30 seconds. Due to the high demand, the submission deadline was extended until 21st of December 2020.

Then, the most interesting session began. Since each post had been posted on the official facebook page of Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya, the voters were given the opportunity to vote for their favourite handcraft. After a lively round of voting, the time period allocated to choose the most favourite craft came to an end on 26th December 2020.

Finally, the most awaited day, which everyone was looking forward to impatiently, arrived with the final results of the Santa’s Elves competition. While the creation of Kasuni Taniya was selected as the ‘most popular craft’, the handcraft submitted by Keerthana Vairavan was slected as the ‘most creative craft’. The ‘most eco-friendly craft’ was submitted by Dasuni Pathirana, while the creation of Dileka Premasinghe was entitled as the ‘best craft’. With the hope of rejoining again with a novel experience, the Santa’s Elves competition was concluded successfully.
