World Red Cross & Red Cresent Day

Every year on the 8th of May the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is commemorated as a humanitarian network of 80 million members worldwide ready to assist individuals afflicted by disasters, conflicts, and other health and social issues.

This date honours the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the first Nobel Peace Prize winner, who was born on May 8, 1828.

Every year, the theme is set for the World Red Cross Day to make an impression on the value of human lives. So, the theme for the year 2023 is Everything we do comes #fromtheheart.”. Humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality are the basic principles that define the Red Cross Movement’s ethical, operational and organizational structure. These principles are crucial to the movement’s approach to assisting those in need during armed wars, disasters caused by nature and other emergencies. Respecting these principles assures the humanitarian essence of the movement’s activity as well as the integrity of the wide range of activities it conducts around the world.

This humanitarian aid organization serves more than 160 million people in 192 countries each year. The Red Cross Movement seeks to protect human health and security while respecting individuals, without regard for gender, skin colour, cast, or religious views. Its purpose is to safeguard vulnerable people from suffering. The Red Cross Movement emerges before, during, and after a health emergency or natural disaster to protect and support people in need.

On World Red Cross Day, we express our gratitude to the Red Cross societies and their volunteers for their unwavering commitment to serving humanity. We salute their selflessness, courage, and dedication, and acknowledge their vital role in promoting social welfare and building resilience in the face of adversity. As we celebrate this day, let us also renew our commitment to supporting the Red Cross movement and its noble mission of serving humanity.

Happy World Red Cross Day!
