Boundaries Redefined: Down the Wicket ’25

Down the Wicket ’25 lit up the Polhena Playground on 18th October 2025, bringing together cricket, camaraderie and festive energy in an unforgettable atmosphere. Organized by the Sports and Recreational Activities Avenue of the Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya, this year’s edition stood out as one of the most vibrant and well-coordinated sporting festivals the club has ever hosted. With the objective of uniting Rotaractors, undergraduates and cricket lovers from across the island, the event created a perfect blend of competition, entertainment and university spirit.

A highlight of this year’s celebration was the distinguished presence of Mr. Dinesh Chandimal, one of Sri Lanka’s most admired cricketers, whose attendance elevated the prestige of the event and inspired every participant present. His encouragement reinforced the purpose behind Down the Wicket: to celebrate sportsmanship, dedication, and togetherness.

With 27 energetic teams stepping onto the pitch, the competition remained fierce and spirited from the very first ball. After an intense series of matches, two exceptional teams rose to the finals: Manchesters, representing the University of Kelaniya and Jolly Boys, representing the non-Rotaractor community. In an exciting and closely contested finale, Jolly Boys claimed victory, taking home the championship trophy.

Individual brilliance also shone throughout the tournament, with players being honored with prestigious awards, including Best Batsman, Best Bowler, and Player of the Tournament, celebrating the talent and commitment displayed during the event.

To appreciate and motivate every participant, the Organizing Committee ensured that all players from all 27 teams received participation certificates as a token of recognition. Additionally, every player was gifted a specially designed Down the Wicket 2025 cap, symbolizing unity and pride in being part of this remarkable sporting event.

Visually enhancing the event’s atmosphere were 24 custom Down the Wicket flags, installed elegantly around the ground, bringing colour and vibrancy to the entire venue.

Down the Wicket ’25 was powered by the invaluable support of six generous sponsors, whose partnerships added immense value to the event. Nawaloka Media joined as our Official Bronze Partner, while Softacare served as the Official Healthcare Partner. Randimar’s BirdEye supported the tournament as the Official Drone Partner, and Pearl Bay contributed as the Official Leisure Partner. St. Lanka Distributions ensured continuous refreshment as the Official Hydration Partner, and Maggie, our Official Food Partner, added flavour to the event. Their contributions strengthened every aspect of the carnival, from hydration to media visibility, ensuring a smooth and exciting experience for participants and spectators alike.

Behind this success stood a dedicated Organizing Committee who worked relentlessly from the very first meeting on 8th August 2025. Guided by the Directors of the Avenue and supported by the Vice President of the club, the team executed each phase of planning with commitment and passion. Weekly meetings, fundraising initiatives, and coordinated PR efforts brought the event to life with professionalism and creativity.

Down the Wicket ’25 once again proved that sports can build lasting memories, friendships, and a sense of belonging. This year’s edition didn’t just continue the legacy; it strengthened it, taking the event’s spirit to a new level of excellence.
