Down the Wicket 2019

The 8th of December 2019 was another memorable day in the calendar of the Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya for it was a day full of fun, excitement, sportsmanship, and fellowship that endowed us lasting memories. It was none other than the Inter Rotaract Cricket Tournament ‘Down the Wicket ‘ organized for the first time in the history of the Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya.

‘Down the Wicket ‘ is a remarkable initiative of our club which was realized through the untiring efforts and commitment of the directors as well as the members of the club, along with the excellent support of the project chair Rtr. Sahan Silva.

The tournament took place at the Cyber grounds of the University of Kelaniya from 9:00 am onwards.

15 clubs participated in the tournament including 5 Rotaract clubs. Namely; Rotaract Club of ACBT, Rotaract Club of IIT, Rotaract Club of Colombo West, Rotaract Club of Colombo Mid Town, and the Rotaract Club of Pearl Island. Moreover, a team from the Leo Club of NSBM, a team from the Department of Marketing Management of the University of Sri Jayawardanepura and 6 teams from the University of Kelaniya participated in the tournament.

The series of fiercely competitive matches ended making ‘Down the Wicket’ championship being secured by the team which represented the Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya. Thus, our very own team with a bunch of spirited souls namely; Rtr. Rusira Nipun, Rtr. Lakshina Rodrigo, Rtr. Himesha Ranganath, Rtr. Prakash Dilanka, Rtr. Sandun Sulakshana, Rtr. Ashan Tharaka, Rtr. Champika Mendis hailed the trophy as the champions of this remarkable tournament.

Champika Mendis was awarded as the Best Batsman and the Man of the tournament.

The team from the University of Sri Jayawardenapura became the Runners Up.

‘Down the Wicket’ marked its ‘ end with numerous memories to cherish while allowing all those who participated to feel the true spirit of sportsmanship. We, as a club would like to thank each and everyone who contributed in many ways to make this event a reality.
