Nil Ahase Wasanthaya

“Kites rise highest against the wind, not with it.”

“Nil Ahase Wasanthaya”, the annual National Kite Festival organized by Kite Sri Lanka and Presidential Task Force on Drug Prevention together with Rotary, Rotaract and Interact Clubs, was held on the 28th of August 2016 at the Negombo Beach Park. The ultimate goal of the kite festival as well as the walk accompanied with it was to increase public awareness about the effects of drug addiction and methods of prevention while offering the participants an opportunity to spend the day relaxing.

The entire event started with the beginning of the kite walk under the theme of “A drug free country”. It commenced at 8.30 a.m. from Telwatta and arrived at the Negombo beach park, where the opening ceremony was held, at 10.00 a.m. with a large crowd of people as well as kites symbolizing the theme of “Say no to drugs”.  During the opening ceremony of the festival, a few honourable members of the Negombo Police and the Presidential Task Force on Drug Prevention provided valuable speeches regarding methods of prevention as well as effects of drug addiction to the gathering.

The kite competition began after the opening ceremony. A large amount of competitors consisting of rotarians, rotaractors, interactors, officers of the Negombo police, the army and the residents of Negombo participated in the competition. The sight of the Negombo sky filled with beautiful and unique kite creations was truly a sight to behold.

It was a great honour for us as the members of the rotaract family of University of Kelaniya to be a part of this great event which paved the way for a good cause.
