Warnayalam

In a world filled with mono, colour brings a beautiful sensation. But when colour is incorporated using special hands, and special minds, the outcome fills up with unwavering beauty.

Project Warnayalam was a joint initiative taken by 3 Rotaract Clubs, Rotaract Club of Chunakkam, Rotaract club of University of Kelaniya, and Rotaract Club of University of Peradeniya. The main focus of this project was to showcase the artistic skills of the deaf and blind child community and to create a platform for them to showcase their artistic skills.

The project was initiated under 2 main phases where at first we planned to have a competition among the children by reaching out to 3 institutions, that take care of blind and deaf children under 3 main districts Colombo, Kandy, and Jaffna and then we planned to select the best arts from all 3 districts and showcase all of them in one location. The competitions were held at the Deaf School Rathmalana from the Colombo District, The Blind and Deaf School in Senkadagala from the Kandy District and Nuffield School for the deaf and the blind, Kaithady from the Jaffna district.

There were 3 organizing committees under the 3 Rotaract Clubs and we were able to hold the competition in the 3 mentioned districts and we were able to collect nearly 150 arts from the students who pictured beautiful paintings on paper. Each painting depicted the flair of uniqueness and novelty.

On the 27th and 28th of May, we held the Art Exhibition at the Art Gallery, Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya where we exhibited 100 plus arts and the exhibition was graced by the President of the Rotaract Club of the University of Kelaniya Rtr. Manula Pethiyagoda, and the members of the Exco and other visitors from the clubs who supported the initiation of the project. It was beyond an exhibition; adding in the essence of hope and joy as the participants witnessed the amazing skills of these children.

The Beauty of this project is that we focused on one of the unspoken communities in the society who also needs platforms and opportunities to showcase their skills but is left un-aided and unseen by the race that everyone is running in this competitive world.

We are grateful to everyone who helped to initiate this project and we are happy that we were able to do a focally important project.
