Waves of Change

In the spirit of collaborative environmental responsibility, the Rotaract Club of the University of Kelaniya joined forces with the Rotaract Clubs of Colombo Uptown, Cinnamon Gardens, APIIT, and ACBT alongside the marine conservation organization ‘The Pearl Protectors’ to execute a beach cleanup and environmental awareness initiative. This joint endeavour came into life with the title ‘Waves of Change,’ which embraced the evolving tide of combatting the pressing issue of marine pollution along the Dehiwala and Wellawatte beaches while fostering a sense of environmental stewardship.

A thoughtfully laid-out plan marked the beginning of this environmental transition, with the 29th of October 2023 being the designated date which was chosen for its promise of clear skies and the availability of willing hearts. A deliberate shift of the stage from the familiar Dehiwala and Wellawatte beaches to the secure sanctuary of Dehiwala Pink Salt Beach was strategically taken, born out of concerns for safety and the desire for a more expansive field for our cleanup undertaking.

The successful execution of the initiative stemmed from a collaborative and well-coordinated effort among the Rotaract Clubs. Tasks were strategically divided and efficiently carried out, with each club contributing to the overall success of the project. From overseeing logistics and finances to organizing post-cleanup fellowship and spearheading PR and marketing efforts, the clubs worked seamlessly together. Moreover, essential partnerships were formed with The Pearl Protectors, Pink Salt restaurant, municipal authorities, and Cleantech Pvt Ltd for waste disposal and recycling services, playing a vital role in the event’s overall success.

As the cleanup unfolded, it became an ecological spectacle. The removal of waste and plastic debris from the sandy shores transformed the beach into a haven of cleanliness. Additionally, this served as a powerful gesture in preventing further harm to marine life. Accordingly, community engagement flourished with the participation of diverse volunteers, fostering awareness and immediate action towards addressing beach pollution issues.

The Dehiwala and Wellawatte coastline now boasts sustained cleanliness and a more resilient marine ecosystem. The project forged a persistent culture of environmental stewardship and responsibility among participants and also laid the groundwork for ongoing collaboration and joint ventures in environmental causes among the participating groups. Furthermore, this initiative carved a significant chapter in the story of building a sustainable and environmentally conscious community. The waves may wash ashore, but the impact of this initiative will resonate far beyond the tides, reminding us that each concerted effort is a step in the journey of change.
