World Vegan Day

World Vegan Day is commenced on the First of November every year to bring light to the philosophy of veganism and its positive impacts. Veganism in simple terms, is the practice of abstaining from the use of all animal products. It is the rejection of commodity status from animals and engaging in a life free of animal cruelty. Veganism implements animal rights, and promotes sustainable and compassionate choices. The people who practice veganism are called vegans.

World Vegan Day finds its roots in England in 1994 in the hands of Louise Wallis, the president of the Vegan Society of the United Kingdom. At first, it was set to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Vegan Society and to spread the word ‘Vegan’ coined by Donald Watson and Dorothy Morgan.

There are various reasons as to why people choose to be Vegan. There are Dietary Vegans who find vegan diets helpful for their health conditions, Ethical Vegans who condemn animal cruelty and Environmental Vegans who are conscious about the environment and prioritize making sustainable choices.

There is a certain stigma surrounding the Vegan lifestyle that makes society believe that it is simply not a sustainable, nutritional lifestyle- specially in regards to the dietary aspect of veganism. This is a false belief. The argument that veganism limits too much is null in the face of modern vegan food products or meat alternatives like vegan burger patties, vegan mayonnaise etc.

Popular vegan products contain fruits and vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, tofu, fortified dairy substitutes and vegan alternatives. There are hundreds of ways to create delicious, nutritional meals using these products.

However it is indeed true that one needs to thoroughly research Veganism before leaping into the lifestyle. It is a drastic change from the normal lifestyle thus, needs to be carefully thought out and planned. Not doing so will be harmful. Other than this precaution, Veganism is safe and many will vouch for that.

Since 1994, World Vegan Day has evolved into a universal celebration, playing a significant role in promoting veganism as a viable and ethical lifestyle that contributes to the well-being of animals, humans and the planet. It acts as a day for vegans all around the world to celebrate their tenet and encourage everyone else to explore and embrace a vegan lifestyle. This is your sign to try the vegan way of life!
