Green Legacy 2017

“The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.”

The long term sustainability of mankind is ultimately dependent upon the ecological footprint we leave behind. Continued usage of natural resources could only be guaranteed if the prevailing resources are utilized in a way that do not compromise the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The community service project Green Legacy ’17, was carried out for the 3rd consecutive year, keeping this very own idea of ecological sustainability in mind.

Green Legacy is the brainchild of the Rotaract Clubs of the University of Kelaniya, University of Peradeniya and University of Moratuwa. The 3rd repetition of this community service project was carried out on the 1st of April 2017.

The proceedings of the day started after the arrival of participants from the Rotaract Clubs of University of Kelaniya and Moratuwa at the Peradeniya University premises. All the participants then gathered at the Hanthana Lodge for the collection of plants that were to be planted in the Hanthana wilderness.

The hike started soon afterwards, where the members of all three clubs treaded in unity, carrying the plants through the breathtaking view of the Hanthana mountain range. The journey to the top through the wilderness made this project an escape to nature’s tranquility for many of the participants, which made this a get-away from the busy chores of the city.

Upon the arrival to the place of planting trees, all the participants worked tirelessly making preparations such as earthing up for the plants. An open area in the midst of the Hanthana wilderness was chosen for the tree plantation. After as much ground was covered from the plants available, the participants ascended furthermore up the mountain to enjoy a glimpse of the mesmerizing view as seen from the top of the Hanthana peak.

Participants started to descend for lunch in the afternoon, where a session filled with fun and laughter in the midst of music and songs followed, further promoting fellowship among the Rotaractors.

After all the proceedings for the day, the participants from the Rotaract Clubs of the University of Kelaniya and Moratuwa started to head back, thanking the Rotaract Club of University of Peradeniya for the support extended throughout the day.

Green Legacy ’17 turned out to be not only a community service project that built advocacy for a timely cause, but also developed fellowship among all the participants from the clubs.

One day these plants would grow into trees, giving shelter, protecting ground water, and cleaning the air for us to breathe, while reflecting the green legacy for the generations to come.
